Contact form

If you contact us, we use your name, your email address, your organisation (if provided) and your message in order to respond to you. The legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in responding to your message efficiently. We retain your message for as long as necessary to handle your enquiry and, thereafter, for a maximum of twelve months in case we need to refer to it again. Contacting us does not result in you being added to a mailing list.

Newsletter

If you subscribe, we use your email address, and your first name if you provide it, to send you the newsletter. We do so on the basis of your explicit consent. We ask you to confirm your email address before your subscription takes effect. You may unsubscribe via any newsletter you receive, or by asking us to do so. The newsletter is sent via Brevo. We retain your subscription until you unsubscribe or ask us to erase it.

Access to articles

Certain essays remain locked until a newsletter subscription has been confirmed. If you subscribe from an essay, we store a cookie in your browser so that the essay can be unlocked for you. This cookie is valid for a maximum of one year. A second cookie records that confirmation is still pending; it expires when you close your browser. These cookies serve only to provide what you requested and are strictly necessary for this feature to function. They are not used for advertising purposes.

Statistics

We use Google Analytics to see which pages are visited and how the website is used. These cookies are not necessary for the website to function. We only place them after you have accepted analytics cookies (on the basis of your consent). Google processes these data on our behalf. We retain statistics for a maximum of 14 months and do not use them to identify you by name. As Google is a US company, data may be transferred to the United States, subject to the safeguards of the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

Other recipients of your data

We do not sell personal data. Hosting, the sending of contact emails, the newsletter and statistics are handled by service providers that process the data on our behalf. These include Brevo for the newsletter and Google for statistics. We have concluded a data processing agreement with each of these parties; they may only use the data for these purposes.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data and to receive a copy of it, and to request its rectification or erasure. You may ask us to restrict certain processing, and you have the right to object to processing based on our legitimate interest, such as in the case of the contact form. You may request to receive the data you have provided to us on the basis of your consent in a commonly used digital format, or to have it transmitted to another party (data portability). You may withdraw your consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or with the data protection authority in your own country. To contact us, please use the email address stated above or the contact page.

Changes

We update this page whenever our handling of personal data changes. This version is dated 21 October 2026.
